I've been given a copy of The Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler. (She wrote it, she didn't give it to me) The cover makes it look like a WWII romance and I'm dreading a pseudo Mills & Boon pap fest. Has anyone read it and is it worth the effort?

I've not read it, but Ms Tyler is generally fairly well-regarded author so probably not as pappy as it looks.

I have read some Anne Tyler books, I would recommend her books to anyone. I was dubious at first when a friend gave me "Ladder of years" but the instant I started reading it I was hooked and I could'nt put it down the same goes for "Stepping" and a couple more I can't remember the titles of.

Enjoy your book!

I forgot to add that I wouldn't read a Mills & Boon, even if someone offered me money to. Anne Tyler has a completely different style.

This is a good read. A little like watching a long marital conversation/scrap unwind. Covers the implications and possible costs of marrying across social and financial boundaries. Not at all soppy. I really enjoyed it.
