Have you tried reading the help about the Kindle on the amazon web site?

System Requirements:
None, because it's wireless and doesn't require a computer to download content.

Many thanks for your reply. It was a hyperthetical question as I already have a PC and a kindle but was in an argument with someone who insisted you couldnt have a kindle unless you were on line at home
Well it is wireless - mine is the Kindle 3 and I connect to the net work at home. It will connect to any unsecured network if out and about
Once you have your books downloaded onto it you can read them anywhere as they no longer need that net connection to read

You win the argument =)
You would need to have access to the internet to download the books. But you don't have to use a PC to download the books.

Yes you do need to be online, no you don't have to have a PC.
It depends on the kindle. The 3G enable model uses the mobile phone network to access the internet so you DON'T need a wireless router.
