I thought the bright one was Venus and just to the left at the moment is Jupiter. Could be the other way round.
I agree Prudie....Jup is the lesser one

How is Puss, Prudie?

Thank you all
Your username worries me!
Prudie - I am so sorry to hear that, I missed the continuation of BM's moving thread........I must say I thought that was the case when you hadn't responded. Just remember all the great times that you had together and the love that he gave to you...and you to him.

Back to OP, Mars is also quite clear at the moment SW about 45 degrees from horizontal, clearly reddish.
I had the same question in mind tonight because it is so bright. I also noticed a very small star towards the south west which was twinkling. Does that mean I was looking at a star or a planet, or something man-made? I thought the bright object might be Venus - Jupiter is much farther away so would not be so bright (I think). Would anyone who really studies the heavens care to elucidate?
Will the transit of Venus due on June 5th/6th 2012 be visible from northern England? All the sites I've looked at are U.S.A orientated which is another example of the insularity and arrogance which abounds there.
SUNSET PLANETS: This is a great week to admire the sunset. Venus and Jupiter are side-by-side only 3o apart in the western sky, beaming through the twilight as soon as the sun goes down.

For 2 weeks now Jupiter and Venus have been converging closer. Also if you look opposite in the evenings Mars can be seen with the naked eye from roughly 8pm.
Never seen Mars so bright as in the last week or so.
Stellarium is a good freeware tool that will help you identify things in the night sky. http://stellarium.org/

It can tell you when satellites are flying past too (helps if you give it your exact coordinates).
