How do I find and stop duplicate running processes?

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get up the task manager

Then chosse the Process tab.

Then select the one you want to stop and press Stop Process (or whatever the button says)
Watch out and don't just randomly end processes because you think they are duplicates.... some processes will quite legitimately have more than one instance of them running, for example svchost.exe is just a container for other processes so it's not unusual to see several of them in task manager, also latter versions of IE run each tab in a separate process, so it's not unusual to see several iexplore processes running.
