So I have this netbook.

I bought an external DVD player so I could ... err, watch DVDs on it (obvious sentence of the day) ...

... but apparently my netbook won't play DVDs unless I upgrade from Windows7 to Windows7 Premium, or something.

Does that sound right?

Is there anything I can do?

Windows Media Player isn't included within the 'Starter' and 'Home Basic' editions of Windows 7. It's only in the 'Home Premium' and higher editions.

Download and install VLC (which is a better media player anyway):

The instructions for playing a DVD with it are under 'Play a CD/DVD/VCD' here:

I have Windows media Player, Chris!
Well that's got me confused!

Oh, hang on a minute. This suggests that you need Windows Media Center (which is only available with 'Home Premium' and above), rather than Windows Media Player:

(Microsoft like to make things complicated!)

My original solution holds true.
