I remember posting once before about the perils of the self service tills. Now Antony Worrall Thompson has been arrested for shop lifting after he failed to scan cheese and wine in Tesco.

He dodged the scanners on 5 seperate occasions, he must feel so stupid. But I can sympathise with the initial temptation. Anyone else?

Isn't it odd that those who really shouldn't be judgemental can happily wallow in the misfortune of others? What do any of you really know about psychological disorders? The man is not hard up, he is fairly high profile, so what on earth would induce him to ruin his reputation by stealing a few pounds worth of goods from a supermarket? Think how you'd laugh if a member of your own family were in such a position.
Oh, everybody grazes don't they, Khandro?

If I buy a small baguette, by the time I get to the checkout, the checkout girl is sometimes scanning an empty bag, LOL.
Naomi, you seem to think he has a 'psychological disorder', perhaps he has, but I think that people sometimes do such things simply for the thrill it gives them, rather like gambling, parachuting or any other perilous activity, the higher the risk, the greater the buzz. Imagine how thrilling it would be walking into a Bond Street jewellers, you've got a gun (unloaded ) in your pocket, the powerful motor bike is ticking over outside and, ............ Ah!
what I find strange is it's only after they've been caught that psychological disorder is mentioned. Would AWT accept that reason if somebody walked out of one of his restaurants without paying ?
Khandro, //Imagine how thrilling it would be walking into a Bond Street jewellers, you've got a gun (unloaded ) in your pocket, the powerful motor bike is ticking over outside and, ............ Ah!//

I would assume that anyone who saw that as a thrill has a very definite psychological disorder! It would do nothing whatsoever for me!

Vulcan, it's often difficult for people to acknowledge that they have a psychological disorder.
The guy could be in the middle of a mental breakdown, suffering severe stress or be depressed. How does anyone know his mental situation? My friend walked out of a shop with two picture frames under her arm when her father died. She still doesn`t know why she did it.
He must have been down on his uppers if he shopped at Tesco. ;-)
At my age I find I do daft things on more and more regular occasions. It is yet another reason not to self serve. Not that I do anyway, if a shop holds you in such disdain that it can't even be bothered to serve you take the cash, then one needs to go elsewhere; which is why I insist on going to a proper till where someone has a job and a wage.

But 5 times sneaking something past then self serve is a different matter. It's not like he is likely to be in desperate need. I think he needs analysing to see what the heck was causing the risk taking / thrill seeking activity. Going to be hellishly embarassing or him now, not that he can really justify complaining.
S37SJ, that's what I mean. There has to be something wrong. It just doesn't make sense.
Grazing is the practice of eating as and when you feel peckish throughout the day, rather than sitting down to set meals at set times. It isn't exclusive to eating food at a supermarket before you've paid and own it. Although the description is applicable.
Exactly naiomi. He`s well off and well known and has a lot to lose. Deciding to steal from Tesco certainly isn`t a rational decision. It might just be an addiction in the same way as gambling etc. As I said before, at least he`s owned up and apologised. Maybe he does in fact have some undiagnosed condition and this is the catalyst to get it dealt with.
Your mind is not just the conscious part. In fact it is questionable that the conscious part even has the control it thinks it has. Brain scans seem to suggest the mind has opted on a course of action before the individual believes they are aware of even having made a decision. So much appears to the conscious mind to be running on auto. It's possible someone can have opted to pick up pictures when the conscious mind is elsewhere and unaware and so just walked out. I'm less convinced that is likely to be the same issue as with a repeat activity though. IMO that seems more of a need for excitment to me.
Maybe the need for excitement is an addiction in itself though? It`s just a shame he didn`t channel it somewhere else. Maybe he should have taken up bungee jumping!
Naomi, stop making excuses for him. He's a greedy little thief who was caught red-handed. Why did he do it?...because he could!

Your defence of him is a slur on people with genuine mental health problems.
I hate self scanning -we pay enough so let the checkout staff do the work. After 5 offences he clearly thought he was getting away with it as he was a celeb. He is a grumpy bumsious little man and he used to shop in GX (Gerrards Cross )and expected everyone to fawn over him. As he did the crime he must take the punishment.
Not just the odd grape or bread roll that gets 'grazed', I remember a thread for a guy who worked in Tesco, they regularly find the wappers from whole hot roast chickens hidden around the stores. People pick up whole roast chickens from the deli counter, eat them while walking round the store then hide the evidence.
