If guests have been expressly told not to wear black ties to a funeral what should ladies wear? I would normally wear a black suit but am now wondering if I should go for a grey one.

What are your thoughts?

Whatever they feel comfortable and showing some respect in.
Well it does look as if the person didn't like the formal look/tradition, so I'd be inclined to go for the grey. But you must have known the person What do you think they would have wanted?

I think you'll find people may still wear black but in a less formal way.
something colourful................. i dont want anyone to wear mourning clothes at my funeral !
I would agree with all above.
Perhaps as Jem says, they don't want it to look too formal but black or grey suit would be fine.
Anne the OP wasn't asking what to wear at your funeral.

Thanks all, I'll go for the grey.
cheeky wee devil :)
wear the grey but if you know the persons favourite colour wear a touch of that too.... either a blouse or a scarf
If you're told not to wear black tie, then anything respectful will do, IMO.
A lot of people now go for the "celebrate their life" rather than "mourn their death" approach.

The Irish have been doing it for years ... turn up and get ratarsed "in memory of the deceased".

If you've been told to avoid morbid black ... then avoid it.

Blue is safe ... respecctful, but not mournful.
i usually wear a dark blue to funerals, its colourful enough to not look morbid, and tame enough to look respectfulx
Depends on who it is and the time of year... for very close family friends I wear an outfit I know they liked... so for my grandfather it was a violet dress he'd bought me for my honeymoon, for an elderly aunt a black and white patterned dress, more distant then a dark grey or navy outfit with a soft toned shirt and a grey/black scarf ....
