can i get a loan from a credit union without having an account with them

I don't think so. By having an account with them and making regular deposits you're showing that you could repay the loan when you do get one.

In the middle sixties I joined our local fledgling Credit Union by opening an account for £1. I had just got my first job and was able to borrow £500 immediately to buy a car. It was a "leg-up" which I greatly appreciated and I have been a member ever since. For a long time, the Manager's Christian name was Kevin and "going to see Uncle Kevin" became a euphemism for going for a loan! A great organisation!
