I am not sure where this is going, but have a bad cold, a wheezy miserable stay awake cough. Got to the doctors and now have antibiotics, so far so good, but with the tinnitus i already have, i have lost much of my hearing, and now worried this could be the shape of things to come. I am taking as much rest, and lemon with paracetmols, covonia, to try and ease it, but my hearing is really muffled, will this come back do you reckon.

I'm no expert em, but a friend of mine with a really severe cold had her hearing affected a couple of years ago and she was worried, but when the cold cleared, she was back to normal again. Hope this helps x

notasyoung, could be, it's just that i had this before, and it has impaired my hearing no question. It's a virus and knocked me over this time, There lots of it about apparently, and going on the doctors surgery would say it's true, coughing, spluttering and the like, no place to be ill....
I think that sometimes when you get a head cold, the eustachian canal blocks up, causing a loss of hearing
Oops, temporary loss of hearing :)
Question Author
it has amplified the tinnitus to totally unacceptable levels, so listening to music, and hear what someone is saying is really hard to adjust to.
I cannot give you the guarantee that you are looking for, concerning the return of your hearing, but I can say, that it is more than likely that your hearing will return when you infection settles.
Sqad knows what he's talking about em, so fingers crossed for you.
Question Author
sqad, i hear, or not? that you have been rather poorly, so sorry if that's the case.
I have been given erythromycin, and take them every 6 hours, so hopefully wont take too long to help, but with the cold/bug/infection it's making me tip over, already have vertigo, and all without imbibing any alcohol, double whammy....
I'm the same, I have hearing loss anyway with menieres and when I have a cold it and the tinnitus gets a lot worse. It always clears eventually though sometimes takes a while after the cold that set it off has settled.

I find it more disorientating as it makes such a difference in hearing between ears but nothing really to do but wait for it to sort itself out. Can't wait for mine to sort itself out this time though still got the cold since Friday and still producing mucus so might be a while yet. I can feel quite vulnerable too, especially if I hear noises at night when I'm on my own but I can't hear well enough to work out what/where etc...

I get a similar thing in my ears sometimes if I'm anywhere loud like in a late bar with music.

Been trying to keep my ears covered under a hat while outside as they went really painful before the cold kicked in last week. No pain now, just blocked.
I know this is a late post but I also have this chesty cough/cold thing which I blame on two selfish passing shoppers at Tescos who were too lazy & thoughtless to cover their mouth when coughing!
em, it sounds like the loss of taste with a heavy cold, which always returns when the cold subsides. Got one myself at the moment, hopefully will be over by Christmas.

am aware that this was from 14th december, but i still have this virus, and nothing so far has shifted it, have had endless medication, seen doctor numerous times, and feel worn out, and not a little bit scared. The hacking cough only subsides with a strong suppressant, now worried if stop taking it, it will still be there. So sleep has been out of the question. Had chest x ray, blood test, results next week. Not sure why i am updating this, perhaps it's hard to express one's fears to the doctor for fear of coming across as a hypochondriac. My ears are still blocked, and seeing how this started 10th december am wondering if anyone else is also having a prolonged bout of illness due to a diagnosed winter virus.
awww Em. still can't offer anything but cyberhugs. x

I know you were poorly last year for 5 weeks and that you feel apprehensive with this one. It will shift itself in due course. Which will be longer than you want, bugs are like that. Nasty little devils.
Question Author
alba, thank you for kind words, yes 5 weeks before, so not counting the days so much as wishing that it would give me some peace. The doc gave me some medication that seems to have been designed to stop anxiety, and in turn induced a racing heatbeat, and the shakes, so not a happy camper.
Hope you feel better soon. My hearing still hasn't cleared either.
Question Author
jenna, what gets me is not knowing if the medication is working, or is suppressing the real cause, and getting in a panic over it. Try not to do that, but after so long it's hard to put anything into perspective.
