What do you think about giving people on the dole food vouchers and a small amount of cash instead of all cash?
Do you think this could be a viable alternative and encourage out of work people to find a job if they want to spend money on luxuries?

I think that it would encourage people on JSA to spend less money on cigarettes and playstations. Many countries don't have any welfare, so why should our generous system pay for big tellies and Embassy No.1? It seems that people in Britain expect to own anything they want even if they can't afford it.

This isn't a rant. I would like to know if this system could work. I know that many peopel on the dole do struggle, but there also seems to be a few who know how to abuse the system. This system could help stop this maybe?

pdust - if it wasn't for so many untruthful people you would not have these problems. the system is there for you. I don't see what threatening violence against me will achieve.

OK. It was an observation that has touched a nerve about single mothers. But I still stand by my point. If you can take your kids for Happy Meal you can take them for a meal provided by the government.
pdust in mungbeanz's world you would be fed in the soup hall for a few months before being placed in the workhouse

At least you will have a bed and a bowl of soup

Don't take your cat or dog to the workhouse it may end up in the soup
Again mungbeanz...How do you know they are single mothers? If they are how do you that it's not a treat from the grandparents? Or paid for out of their wages, like Daffy's daughter?
I'm never taking my kids into McDonalds again... just in case Mungbeanz is lurking with his ration book and food tokens!

working - on shifts or a day off
not nec a parent could be friend or family member

/ Able bodied unemployed people and working people still have the same physical ability to go out for dinner. /

Same physical ability but i hope the working person can afford the bus fare
This has been tried at different levels in different countries. Vouchers which can only be redeemed for food by shops. No problem, but they just use the cash part of their benefit for smokes/booze/drugs. The vouchers will become a trading commodity and become an easy target for counterfeiting.

Most of those 'people' you are aiming to reform are have kids which will suffer under a stricter regime, that's why they have the kids as, a cashcow. It is a problem that comes with a compassionate society and apart from institutionalising these abusers, there is not a lot one can do.
How much money do you get on the dole? Also, what do you mean by Embassy?
Nevermind, page was slow to load.

Not a bad idea but some devious people would find a way to abuse it.
Has anyone here looked at the latest jobless figures ? Unemployment is at the highest level for 17 years and rising rapidly. Where exactly are these hoards of single mums and benefit claimants expected to find work ? Who is going to look after the kids while Mum is in work? The high cost of decent child care is the main reason that single parents are better off on benefit .
The level of ignorance by some on this thread beggars belief, we have seen the reintroduction of work houses and soup kitchens advocated along with suggestions of compulsory sterilization of benefit claimants.
Just waiting for someone to suggest 'ethnic cleansing' and deportation of all immigrants.
