Do I really have to pay a garage £45 to get the serial number off my radio so that I can ask Nissan for the radio code? Is there any other way of getting the code? I've looked through all the paperwork that came with the car when I bought it (secondhand) but no-one appears to have made a note of the code anywhere.

Failing that, sometimes the units have it written on the casing with felt pen by previous owners (I've found that three times!) but this would mean pulling the unit out of the dash a bit to see. Good luck.
If it's the original radio a Nissan main dealer should be able to obtain the code from the manufacturer's database, using the registration number or VIN. (i.e. there should be no need to remove the radio). The typical charge for the service is around £15, probably plus £3 VAT. (That's what Ford dealers usually charge. I can't see why Nissan should be any dearer).

Try a different Nissan dealership:

Alternatively, if you can work out how to remove your radio, there are online services which can provide the code from the radio's serial number. This one has plenty of good reviews. (They can also sell you a special tool to remove the radio, should you need one, and their website tells you how to input the code):

A Nissan dealer should be able to get the code from your vehicle registration number. Local Vauxhall dealer did this for me with a Corsa. Didn't cost anything.
Look in ebay under Nissan if original.
Look under Make model if not.

Thankyou for your promt replies and the links. It was a Nissan dealer that quoted the £45 to take radio out to get the code. I will try and get the radio out myself and take it from there. Many thanks guys.
£45? They are having a laugh! But then from my experience of Nissan dealers they all wear balaclavas and stripey tops. Sell the cars cheap and sting you once you are lumbered with them. For £45 you could buy a new CD player from Halfords and throw the sh1tty Nissan unit in the canal where it belongs.
^^ Yes, except that depending on the model of Nissan you might need a fascia adaptor, loom adaptor and antenna adaptor.
You'd also need your bumps felt for shopping at H*%$ords
You could custom some bits of wood to fill the gaps and varnish them nicely but that would just show how fake the Nissan plastic wood was.
