Does anyone know how often a house should be re-wired please?

I don't believe there is a set time. You replace the cables when they need replacing. My guess is that they should last a few decades at least.
our flat is owned by large company ,very well run and maintained built in 63 and rewired in 03 so 40 years there
A house built in the last 30 years or so should never need rewiring, providing there have been no additions or alteration to the complete circuit.

If you are in the slightest doubt about the condition of your installation, have a registered (niceic/elecsa/napit) electrician conduct a PIR (Periodic Inspection Report) for you. Anything detrimental will show up under testing and the inspector will advise of anything that requires urgent attention and any remedial work that may be necessary for your own safety.
