No, I meant Spain. The vast Spanish colonies were allowed to trade only with Spain. Look at this map showing Spain's territory at the end of the 18th century. Then note the map in the bottom left corner. This shows the extent of the former colonies that Spain lost within 25 years through fights for independence, caused by dissatisfaction over the stranglehold Spain had on trade...
