When we bought the laptop we installed a free AVG security thingy We are now getting a prompt everytime we turn the computer on requesting that we install an update. It gives the option to update now or postpone. It says the computer will shut down when it has done its thing and then restart. We have tried to install it but the damn prompt still keeps coming up. How do we get rid of it pse?

Uninstall AVG completely. Then either reinstall it by clicking the blue box here:

or use the free version of Avast! instead (which seems to be taking over from AVG as the most popular anti-virus solution):

owdhammer - I've had free AVG for years without a problem
Use Revo Uninstaller to remove AVG as there are some rogue versions getting around . Use Avast Free Antivirus and you should have no problems it is a better program
If you do LOTS of browsing around .. use Microsoft SE .. not Avast.
Good reason for this .. unless you like going slowly.
rsvp...You must be one of the few lucky ones. I tried free AVG and every few days I was being prompted to up-date or to buy the automatic up-dating version. Consequently, I opted for MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) and now have no cause for complaint.
