On the other side of the coin, I'd commend BT - the twice I've had dealings with their helpdesk in the subcontinent, they rang me back when they said they would - spot on - and got me back on-line, no probs. Long calls but very efficient at doing what it said on the tin.

It's going back many years but I think that the old East Midlands Gas Board might still be responsible for the worst customer service that I've ever received. They disconnected the gas fire in my bedsit (after I'd reported problems with a blocked flue) and put a red warning label on it, stating that it must be properly connected before it was used again. After the problem with the flue had been rectified, I then spent TWO YEARS trying to get them to come and reconnect the gas fire. Then, to add insult to injury, they sent me a SUMMONS, as they were taking me before the criminal courts for my(!) failure to have a faulty gas appliance properly reconnected!

Tara - but Scottish notes are legal tender in England and vice-versa. Which makes it especially cheeky the bank tried to charge you.

You find that English towns which get a lot of Scots visitors (e.g. Blackpool) will often take them, but we've had real trouble if we've brought them home when we've been up on a visit.

local pub to my mother, went for lunch, except wait an hour then after complaining, they apologised, then brought the wrong order, which was cold, then when i said it was cold, and the wrong order, could they at least bring hot food of some description, waitress looked nonplussed, never again

restaurant in Spain, took an hour to cook our paella, when we enquired about it, it had been served to the bloke on the next table - who'd eaten it, even though he hadn't ordered it and his wife had been served with nothing.

When the owner found out, we could hear noises like Basil Fawlty berating Manuel in the kitchen :-)

I have a fear now because I'm think I remember having an argument with a cashier after she said she wouldn't accept a Scottish note I had. Sorry cashier lady, wherever you are.
