Ichkeria look at history-
1991 - N.Zealand (holders) lost to Australia (winners)

1995 -Australia (holders) lost to South Africa (winners)

1999 - South Africa (holders) lost to Australia (winners)

2003 - Australia (holders) lost to England (winners)

2007 - England (holders) lost to South Africa (winners)

2011 - South Africa (holders) lost to Australia (winners ???)
Yes I know, but it's not true to say that "the team that beats the holders wins the cup". Because on at least one occasion two teams did so.
I know you aren't necessarily touting it as a reason to back Australia, but there are only a very few teams capable realistically of winning the RWC anyway, and all perfectly capable of beating each other so perhaps the fact that the holders have always lost to the eventual winners is not so surprising.
Agreed. An example is in the current tournament-

South Africa beat Wales who beat Ireland who beat Australia who beat South Africa.
More correct to use the indefinite article: "A team that beats the holders wins the cup" ...
Anyway, 86.57341% of all statistics are made up........
