slightly burnt/ed

have wrestled the crossword into submission this afternoon but it's resulted in slightly sunburnt/ed? feet as my garden has little shade. Got me thinking as to the correct spelling of sunburned/sunburnt. Be very grateful for an explanation - thank you

both acceptable in English. Just like spelt/spelled

I googled until I was crosseyed and couldn't come up with a definitive answer so am grateful for your reply Bednobs - would like to know the source of the info please - :-))))
My Concise Oxford Dictionary says both are acceptable.

thank you for those two very disparate answers - it's always bugged me xx
burnt is an adjective.
burned is the past tense of the verb.
i don't think it matters how and when you use either, just as long as it's not in an english language exam.
personally i would say i'm sunburnt...except i'm not, just a lovely shade of caramel :)

I'm sure you are stunningly attractive ethandron, I find a shade of caramel is very attractive to me. I thank you from the bottom of my sunburnt feet (although it's actually the tops which are suffering from sunburn) for the clarification.
