Well glen you have answered your own question really: trees cut down which provided food and cover for the birds and a cat in your garden. I would try and discourage the cat as you don't want your feathered visitors to become food for the cat.
Lots of birds will still be feeding in the countryside but will soon be back as it gets colder. Please continue feeding...

Up to now they may not have needed the food you've put out for them. The birds that used to feed in my garden, and have been away for weeks, have only started to return.
You really shouldn't feed birds when there is adequate food for them already. They will not learn where food is in their range...what happens if you go away for a couple of weeks???
birds around these parts are wierd, seemto breed all year round, listen to the cheeping whilest in bath

Good luck and it's great that you are looking after our birds:-)

Thankyou all very much for the advice given with regard to feeding birds,it is much appreciated.
Don't worry-it's not unusual at this time of year for most of the garden birds to disappear!, they're off gorging on all the Autumnal fruits, berry's etc., they'll soon be back when it's all gone-just remember to leave out a token amount of bird food in the garden so they can see where to return to for a regular meal!

Hope this helps :)

Its moulting time, they look very scraggy and become very timid and vulnerable at this time of year. Also I bet there is a sparrowhawk lurking somewhere, the poor little birds hide away for ages after a "kill"
Definitely the abundance of the Autumn fruits
