I set up a free website for our small business a few years ago which looked ok if a little basic due to the limited options and facilities, I think it was a microsoft office online software which gave you free web space as well but now I am starting a charity which is mainly going to be internet based, the website will be the hub of the whole charity and should hopefully get quite a few hits.

Because all donations go to the charity and I spend all my own money of travel, admin, printing costs, and offer my time voluntary.I don't have the money to throw around, I need a free site, which I can make myself, ideally a really good modern proactive site, or for a website design company to do one for free and then hand over the rains to me so I can manage the site, because the whole point of the site would be me logging on everyday or so to make updates etc. I need full control remotely 24/7

Can anyone advise on the this subject and possibilities of course it's the money which is the issue.

Thanks in advance

You may want to look into Charity Builder http://mycharitybuilder.com/. Its a free site where you can register your organization and raise funds through there while still getting your name out there. Worth a try!
