Today it was announced that the average cost of a funeral is circa £7000. As these costs have been rising astronomically how will the average family be able to cope with the death of their loved ones?

My uncle died in May and his funeral cost about £1,800. If you can not afford the costs of a funeral I think that there are some grants you can get from the government. Will try and find out from my father what this was and then get back to you all. £7K seems an awful lot.

Can anyone here do the neighbourly thing and let us know where we can find a funeral for a knockdown price?
My Dads funeral cost 8k
Crikey..we better all live forever at those prices.
insurance? pre paid funeral plans.... I have a policy that will cover the costs when I move on... with a bit left over for whoever I leave behind...
my father died 3 years ago and i was entitled to absolutely nothing, had to pay for it all myself
and not everyone gets it
Two years ago it cost me around £4,000 for my husband's funeral, but it was quite big and there were a lot of people there. He was very popular.
I am going to donate my body to science. That way we can avoid the costs of a funeral. Would anyone care to join me on this one? Can anyone here enlighten us as to the grants available for those who do not have a penny in the world?

I know that they exist but do not know enough about them to tell us all. Some help would be appreciated here.

Not all bodies left to science are acceptable.
Donating your body to medical science is not as straightforward as you may think.
Many bodies are rejected as unsuitable and very often the family is expected to 'dispose' of the remains once the body is finished with.
And sadly you cannot donate your organs and leave your body to medical science.
What Happens if a Medical School Does Not Accept My Body?
If your body is not accepted by a medical school your family will become responsible for your remains.

Of course nobody is obliged to pay for a funeral.
If the deceased has no assets then the state will pay for a basic funeral if the family refuses to do so.
It's the same as weddings - newspapers keep reporting that they cost an 'average' of 16k or something ridiculous. It can be done for much cheaper, but many people choose to push the boat out.
Oh Karen. Do you mean a Viking funeral?
LOL daisy, as in Up Helly Aa?!
A neighbour died a few years back. When we asked his widow when the funeral was she said, "there isn't going to be one, he was collected by the undertaker and taken to the crematorium". I don't suppose that cost too much.

My sister died last December. She had a woodland burial. It cost £2,700 including about £600 for the wake afterwards.
After reading all the posts on this thread I have decided to make a stand - I am not going to die.

;-)
