Modem/router.

Just to get things clear...... I often see reference to a router when I believe it is a modem and visa versa, even on computer equipment sites.

It is right that a modem is the part that deciphers the signal so the computer understands it, and the router is purely the part that splits the deciphered signal up into multiple signals and send it to various equipment like other computers etc.?

Yes you are right in principle.

Note that a router normally includes a modem, though when I first got Virgin cable I had a modem from Virgin and had to buy a cable router that I assume did not include a modem.

Now Virgin supply the superhub router the modem is included in the superhub.
