when printing a 322 KB word document to a HP Laserjet 6P printer the print job spools to 10 MB+, making the printer run out of memory and the job fail. Cause and solution please?

Rasterization of text i suppose? Try altering some of the settings regarding printing text as graphics or printing straight to the printer rather than spooling. You'll find these in the driver setup.
