Thanks also housemouse. 4a answer (linkword to 1a) is nation so that gives dough nation (donation)

I haven't done the DT Quickie for over 30 years. When I did it was only to answer the first two across clues as they always made a phrase or saying, sometimes painfully so. Pity other compilers don't take this ploy on board, it does add interest.
