I've just checked my statement to discover that my bank has made a payment to a company using my old debit card which has been cancelled! Apparently because I set up the agreement the fact that the card was cancelled doesn't matter they still allow the payments to be taken from it.
No one ever told me that!
Not really a question, just a rant, I'm livid!

yep, that'll be a continuous payment authority. Not your bank's fault i'm afraid, but yours

I know it's my fault but who new that payments could still be taken from a cancelled card? Certainly not me, what's the point of cancelling it if it can still be accessed!
Still Livid!

NO IT WASN'T A PORN SITE!
It was a Sparebackup account that PC world sold me when I first bought my PC.
awww don't be cross i was only kidding you

Sorry Bednobs! I've calmed down now.
and breathe...
I knew.
Do you mean credit Card?
Did you want to make the payment?
I would not have known. By any reasonable definition a card that has been cancelled is a card that is no longer valid, and so any payment demand made using its information should be denied.

It seems yet another example of how just abut everything is set up as a 'gotcha' for the average bod in the street. Always some excuse, rarely any protection for the victim.
Yes, you need to cancel it with the organisation (PC world) that takes your money.
There will be occasions when people cancel a card and forget they have an annual payment on there that they need to make

No it is a visa debit card that had been cancelled, I assumed (incorrectly) that when a card had been cancelled that was it. So again I assumed (again incorrectly) that when the subscription came up for renewal sperebackup would have to contact me for payment and I could simply cancel, not that my bank would just automatically pay them.
Oh well live and learn.

@ Old Geezer that's what I thought!
Was the cancelled debit card linked to your existing bank account or one you had closed?
You could regard it as like an annual direct debit- they will take it every year until you tell them to stop, or a cheque you wrote to them before you closed the account.
An example of why I hate the concept of DD, of which this is obviously a variant. And have no warm feelings to all who worked to make it so ubiquitous instead of killing it at birth. There was never anything wrong with an SO, and one knew they controlled the outgoings from their savings with that.

It was a debit card linked to my existing account! Anyway I've been on to sparebackup so hopefully I should now at least be able to cancel, don't know if I'll get my money back for the next twelve months subscription though yet,
