Whenever I try to open websites a message appears informing me : 'Intenet explorer script error - Do you want to continue running scripts on this page' ; what are scripts and how do I get rid of these annoying messages ?

Scripts in this sense refer to VBScript or Javascript running client-side in the background. There's not a lot you can do that won't severely affect your use of every other website. The problem is to do with bad coding by the site's designers, but turning off javascript will disable it for all site, and many sites use it for navigation - hence you're quite frankly buggered if you turn it off. On the upside, it's only the site with bad coding that won't work properly with the rrors - it can't do you any harm at all.
Just as a footnote to lisaj's reply, you can turn off the annoying message in IE - see tools/internet options/advanced and find disable notification about script errors.
