2. Wingerworth in Derbyshire.

1. Earl Sterndale

That is what I've got but I do not see that these places follow "a logical route" across country!!!

aclue juliely the last part of the place name is DALE, the remainderb of the name starts with another name for peer (a title ) the centre part is another word for severe, hope this helps. Its in north Derbyshire
too late, someone doesn't believe in giving clues

Sorry juliely!!

Just realised you wanted clues only!

Quizmonster gave answer and I just followed suit.

Given just clue for your Rainbow one.

Hey! It wasn't my fault. I simply supposed that "clues to British place names" was a reference to the actual clues which immediately followed rather than a request for clues rather than answers! In other words: "These are the clues I want your help to solve." (Indeed, I'm still far from convinced I was wrong to do so.)

That is fine, quizmonster, all help gratefully received.
Thanks everyone.

OK, Julie. In that case, No 3 is Doveridge...dodge = evade around the opening letters (at first) of very early religious institutions. Also in Derbyshire.
