Im driving to Spain and someone has told to be beware of bandits trying to stop you on the spanish motorways? They say the Spanish Police dont actually stop motorists on the motorway.

Is there any truth in this?

Think about it – when chasing a murderer on a motorway, the Spanish Police have to wait until they turn off onto an A road.
driven for many years in spain both motorways and all roads there are and never had a problem. Use your common sense and take sensible precautions as you would in the UK (I hope!)
In southern France and Spain thugs have been targetting obviously flashy cars and their bejewelled drivers for some time. Big shiny 4x4s pulling large expensive caravans for example, or sportscars driven by supermodel-types.
The police will only want to stop you if you break the law, so don't break the law. And if you look pretty much like the rest of the traffic, you won't stand out.
I find it helps deter thieves if you don't wash your car, don't line the back shelf with rolexes and playstations, and keep the inside messy - kids covered in snot and sticky stuff are useful.

Thanks Hymie , most constructive and helpful. Can see you put a lot of thought into that.
Must remember not to commit a murder!

Also AA have recommended not to stop until you get to a toll.

Thanks Mrsann and Mosaic, useful.
