OK first Question on here (takes deep breath) I'm seeing my son off on Saturday at Heathrow terminal 4, he's going to Australia for a year. In these days of global terrorism is it OK to take photos in the terminal or use a mobile? Sounds a bit of a silly question but I haven't used an airport for many years.

Yes, we've done both, recently.
Officially, all filming and photography within the airport requires a permit. See here

However (While I've not used Heathrow for ages) I've seen loads of people at Stansted taking pictures of friends and relatives, without ever being challenged by anyone. The only areas where their are prominent signs forbidding photography are in the zones where security checks are carried out on hold baggage (and, for arriving travellers) at immigration control.

Mobile phones can be used throughout airports (other than at the actual passport control desk for arriving passengers).

Wow! Not such a silly question. I'll leave the camera behind I think after all I've got very recent pics anyway.
Phone is fine though, redmeat, lots of people switch their phones on again when they are waiting for their luggage, and don't switch them off until they are in the departure lounges.
It's no problems at all. Just don't take photos which may have security implications, for example by the security entrance to airside etc. I have a media permit to take pics anywhere at LHR but for meeters n greeters it's regular practice. Hope this helps n they have a good flight.
Yeah ... lol
Take your camera. Thousands of tourists wandering around with them!
