Got my latop back from repair tonight, kept switching off and restarting also freezing. The bl***y thing has just done it again. No warning just a black screen. She (repair lady) said it was overheating so I had it propped up on 2 books until OH makes me a frame for it. Soooo frustrating.

I take it that you have tried swearing at it (obviously won't make any difference but it might make you feel better).
Have you asked our computer wizz's on here to help? -

My language has to be heard to be believed but I'm too much a lady to repeat iit on here. Looked on t'internet for laptop stands, so many different ones to choose from. OH says he can make me a simple frame to sit laptop on to get air underneath so that is his job for tomorrow. Repair lady also said I had too much stuff on it so has removed a lot.
carandrog, i got a good laptop cooler frame from the pound shop

OK I'll have a look tomorrow, thanks.
I had the same thing a few months back. How long was it on before it cut out? If it's anything like my problem the fan is b*ggered and you have wasted your money on an incompetent repair lady. Can you hear the fan? If not, that's probably the problem. If so, get a reputable repairer to install a new one - shouldn't be too expensive.
yes, have a look, theyre ideal.
theyre on display attached to a square card.
grey, light plastic adjustable frame with black feet.

(im in warwickshire in the midlands, so no doubt my pound shop would be miles away from where you are)
PS
Just to give you an idea of the breakdown of costs:
Price of replacement fan: £7.50.
Installation of same: £17.50, comprising
a) removal of small back panel - 2 seconds.
b) insertion of new fan - 2 seconds
c) replacing back panel - 2 seconds.

Total bill: £25.00

I shall leave it to the more mathematically minded to work out the hourly rate at £17.50 per six seconds, but nice work if you can get it.
(Think I've got it - £175 per hour. Lawyers, eat your hearts out! This is where the money is at!)

She charged me 2 hours @ £35 = £70. We call her the mad Russian, she is about our age (retired) Waist length dyed red hair, enormous boobs with very low cut tops, and mini skirts, she doesn't sit very ladylike at all, she is Russian married to a Scot.
I will look for a proper stand and if no good investigate new fan being fitted.
I'm not sure if the noise I can hear is the fan or not, slight hum when I put my ear right next to it.
