My printer lights up and makes all the usual noises but won't print. I've checked the connections are ok (which they are) and tried again, but stlll nothing.

What make and model?
Have you removed and reinstalled the software?
If you have several ink cartridges on it and one is empty or missing it may stop it working.

Its an Epson Stylus DX4050 and I don't know anything about removing and reinstalling software!
Are you sure all the ink cartridges are securely installed and all have got ink in them?
Epson printers appear to have a feature that means unless all cartridges are fitted and available the machine will not work.
I have an epson stylus SX218 and if any of my ink cartridges are too low it refuses to print, until I have replaced all the low or empty ones.

Hi canasta, have just turned it back on to try again and the ink symbol has started to flash, usually when I've been low on ink the Epson message comes up saying 'ink is low' or something similar, so it hasn't happened this way before, will look into it.
Hope you've got it sorted...it's so annoying.
Otherwise check you've no paper stuck in it.....
If you have checked all above and are sure everything is OK then try a test print as per this link

If that doesn't help post here again.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your help, changed 2 cartridges and photocopied ok, can't get the printer to cancel a document so think that might be the source of my problem, will keep at it. Thanks again, all most helpful (with no sarcastic remarks either) lol!
Try unplugging the connection between the computer box and printer, then delete the file in the print queue, then reconect and try prniting again.

GRRRRR!! Have tried the test page (wouldn't print), tried unplugging and reconnecting and document still won't delete so am going to call it a night and will ring Epsom tomorrow cos I'm fed up now, all of your suggestions should've worked so it must be something a bit more serious. Thanks to all again. x
