sorry folks but I'm really not sure what category to put this in so I'm just hoping you will all be intrigued!
The straps (non-detachable) on my husband's rucksack are smelly with sweat (sorry) and washing said rucksack has made no difference. Neither has febreze (just makes them smell even more peculiar).
Any suggestions?

How disgusting.
It might need a few goes with the febreze. It worked for me on something VERY smelly! Good luck!
Secure all the straps then bung it in the washing machine on the highest temperature setting with biological powder.

You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs, Albags, and you certainly can't walk up a Munro without breaking sweat!
Smother them in baking powder or bicarbonate of soda. It'll suck out the sweat and the smell. Advice from Kim and Aggie.
What about the product you can buy to wash smelly trainers?
It's the bacteria in sweat that smells so try something antibacterial with boiling water. I'd also recommend a very hot wash in the washing machine if the material it's made of will stand it.
How old is the rucksack? Time for a new one maybe?
There are some things which, however hard you try, are just going to get smelly ...

Trainers ...

Bike saddles (sorry!) ...

Crash helmets ...

Ski boots ...

and ... apparently ... Rucksack straps !
put the straps bit only in a plastic bag with Odour Eaters [for smelly trainers]overnight.

I had hoped to come back to you all with some idea of what worked best and thanks for all your wonderful suggestions. However, despite passing all of them on to the OH he hasn't done any of them!

Birthday in a few months so perhaps a new rucksack will be on the cards.

Thanks anyway
I spray smelly trainers with antibacterial spray. Ordinary kitchen type. Takes majority of smell away.
