It seems that every iron that I get, no matter the price, I end up with what best can be described as 'sand particles'. It seems that we may have an issue with the quality of water and its hardness. I'm based in London. Can anyone suggest a solution as it's beginning to affect the iron I use?

You are getting a build up of limescale. You need to use deionised or distilled water in your iron.
Use distilled water to fill it.
I use a dry iron , never a steam iron, and spray with a separate bottle of water if I need to remove creases ,or sometimes a wet cloth with the highest setting for thicker fabrics
Spend a bit more and get a Tefal (other makes arte available) steam generator iron. Limescale is easily flushed from the main tankl as the iron itelf only carries the steam from the generator body.
Ironiong is a doddle. We have had loads of irons over the yeas but this Tefal has lasted longeast and performed superbly. Ironing is now now no chore.
Sorry about that spelling. It's the Raki talking!
