When I was a youngster (many years ago) we used to call fish & chips, fish & nerks, and we used to go to the nerkery for them.
Was this just a local slang term, or did other people use the name nerks for chips?

In Derby we would ask for a pea mix or bean mix but just a few miles away in any direction and they would look at me blankly. Some would also put gravy on a pea mix but those were the days when gravy was a cheap option.
