the Royal palaces were smelly and dirty once 600 or more people had spent a few weeks in them, which is why the court went on progress every few months, to allow for the palace they had left to be cleaned. the Royal food bills show that there must have been alot of procurment of surplus supplies and people were being fed that were not part of the courrt.
Envoys and staff from across Europe were in constant long term attendance and diplomacy and court ettiquette was essential. There were several families that dominated the court and intermarried to strengthen their ranks.
