Perhaps you are not living up to the potential that you perceive yourself to have. It is obvious you have personal standards (feel better than others), but are you living up to them yourself?  You are not lacking in confidence it seems though.

High self importance, low self esteem-a common personality combination amongst addicts and alcoholics.Therapy required!!!!Its one thing to be successful/smart etc,its another to be loving/respectful etc to other people. The best is not always the nicest.
You appear to have answered your own question, UC!

You think you are better than most people, so you may be treating them with some degree of contempt.  Contempt necessarily means a dislike of the object of it.  Disliking most people around you is bound to make you feel unhappy, as humans are sociable creatures.  You need to stop judging people by your own high standards, and like them for who they are.  There is always someone cleverer, or wittier, or nicer than you are, and on the other side someone less so.  Sorry if that sounds trite.
