I saw a pair in the local park today - a type I'd not seen before. This is in an urban/coastal area.
They were similar in size to a blackbird or magpie. Colour-wise a kind of buff with wings that had black and a very bright blue band on them...it was the blue that caught my eye. The head was slightly flat-ish on top.
I've looked on the RSPB site....but saw nothing similar.

Actually...that's what I thought also....mostly by the head shape. They were quite striking looking. I'll look for them again tomorrow.

Jays are one of our more beautiful birds...they catch people out because they seem too exotic for the uk
I'm lucky in that there are a lot of jays in my area - they really are lovely birds and, as rowan says, look a bit exotic for Britain

That's what I thought, rowan and bensmum. Apparently they are quite 'shy' birds-so I consider myself fortunate to have seen them in an urban park.
