Do I need to disconnect a flat battery when charging it? A friend said I should but I didn't last time I did it, (with no problem). Thanks.

I'd disconnect it. Easier to connect it to the charger, and no chance of an unexpected load on the battery whlst you're trying to charge it.
almost best to disconnect
Correct answer is to disconnect it as stated by Old Geezer and TonyV

But, I've done it. Only used a trickle charger though and wouldn't recommend a fast charger. make sure battery bay has good ventilation and you protect surrounding area from spillage and gassing damage.
I was once told that there was a slight chance of burning out the alternator if the battery was left connected whilst charging.
If you do disconnect the battery remember to get the radio code before you do.
Also make sure you have the code to to put back into your radio if required before disconnecting the battery.
good call Chuck - otherwise another £5 to get code
You must disconnect the battery on most modern high tech cars, there is a high risk of frying the cars electrics.

I do use my motorcycle battery charger on my car though, it takes longer but being a low charge input it does no damage.

To be fair, tony, good call to Graham-W as well as we both posted the same thing at the same time :)
I once had a Rover 820 and an AA bloke disconnected the battery to do something and it bu99ered the engine management system.
