hiya everyone, i buy 90% of my clothes at m&s but recently i have found that their quality has changed, first thing i am disppointed with is a long black cardigan i bought, its got really bitty if you know what i mean, i was nt going to complain about it but this week i went into my nearest m &s and bought some new bedroom slippers because i m going into hospital next week for a new hip, i have worn them for 3 days and they have come unstitched, i am now having to go back into town on the bus just to change them. so my £10 slippers are going to cost £14 not fair.

A retailer is obliged to ensure that you're not left out of pocket when they sell you defective goods. Kick up a bit of a fuss and you'll probably get a £5 gift voucher (or even a £10 one!). It sometimes helps to phone first, so that a manager will have already authorised the payment by the time that you get to the store.

Hi i work in retail, not in m&s but very similar, and if that were a pair of our slippers we would change them straight away and it wouldnt be a problem, i'd give your local store a ring first and explain that, you just want to change them, explain about your hip and they will probably pay for your travel expenses, thats what we would normally do anyway. i hope you get them all sorted and theres no need to kick up a fuss,that just makes you and the staff uncomfortable and the whole situation worse.

I wouldn't ring. Just go there and explain to the assistant. If you are not satisfied with what they say/do, then ask for the manager. If you are not happy with their response, do what Chris says and 'kick up a fuss' (it works nine times out of ten). Kicking up a fuss doesn't mean swearing and shouting. Just demand your rights. Get their name and mention that you will be contacting their head office.

Just today, I went with a Polish friend of mine to a mobile phone store because he had gotten a raw deal and they hadn't listened to his complaint. When I'd finished with my verbals, he had the manager and two assistants fawning around him and he got exactly what he was entitled to and two months free on his contract. Too many people don't want to 'make a fuss', even if they are getting a raw deal.
It depends on how long ago you bought the cardigan. If it's only a short time ago, and you have the receipt, then I'd be pretty sure they'd exchange or refund it.
I once bought a swim suit in M&S andtook it back to Dubai with me, but the "elastic" in the costume became see thru after two outings, I didnt come back to UK for a whole year but they changed it without a fuss said they had lots of complaints and I did not have the receipt either.
I agree that M&S is going downhill. I've had several items where the zipper has broken within a few months and a coat where the buttons came off the third time I wore it. Really unimpressed :(
I too had the same trouble with a cardigan I bought from M&S landlady, and it was quite expensive. I think it's called pilling (or piling) when you get bits all over it. I have since learned to avoid buying any mixtures of materials such as 35% Cotton, 30% Viscose, 22% Nylon, 8% Cashmere, 5% Angora. If you buy plain cotton or say Merino Wool with nothing added, then you won't get the bits. Linen and Silk are an OK mix. And M&S do some really reasonably priced V Neck Merino Wool jumpers, under £30 I think.
