Castrated Male Dog Mating.

A few days ago one of my dogs who had been castrated about five years ago made a serious attempt to "couple" with a bitch whose owner claimed to have recently been in season. But the relevant parts of the bitch appeared to be quite swollen as if she may still have been "receptive"? Nothing substantive obviously happened but he was definitely "having a go".

Does anyone else have experience of this between dogs? Why would my castrated dog still feel the "urge"? Any (sensible) replies welcome.

Having not been castrated I don't know, but suspect lack of testosterone is insufficient preventative for a dog when they have the scent of a bítch in heat in front of them.
It happens quite a lot and it also happens between two male dogs. My female dog also does it!! I think it is to show dominance over the other dog (bitch).
My female spayed terrier used to try and mount my male castrated terrier - quite funny really, but I was told about the dominance thing by a vet.
Next doors neutered dog is always trying to hump something.
I believe eunuchs also had the urge on occasions I understand, it doesn't always solve the problem.
Some dogs do. My driving instructor had a neutered spaniel who could still mate. I understand that its more common in dogs who are neutered late and even more common in dogs who have had sexual experience. It seems to be something to do with how hardwired the knowledge is.
In human males, adult men who have had their testicles removed can still be capable of normal performance without hormonal support. The key there, from research done on soldiers in the world wars, seems to be self belief so maybe its the same for dogs?
So how about my bitch trying to hump my poor little castrated male terrier!!
that's dominance.
Yes, I know Woofgang, but why adopt a male posture. Strange really.
I was forced to have my dog neutered some years ago yet it made no difference at all to his sexual urges, I don't think he even realised!

Thanks all, it's just that I've had dogs all my life and this is the first time I've ever known this to happen? Just proves the point, where there's a will there's a way?
