My family has been searching for many years to find the lineage of my great grandfather William but always seem to come to a dead end at 1840. No information on his parents or other relations. He just seems to appear out of nowhere.

William WRIGHT (1840–1890) Born in Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Occupation at time of immigration shown as 'Station Master Cowes, Isle of Wight'. Died on North West Frontier India, fighting for or working with the British Army 1890.
His wife was Sarah FRIEND(1847-1932) Born in Kent, England, died at 16th Street, Bowden, South Australia at 85 years of age. They were married in Isle of Wight, in 1868 and had 13 children.
Thomas WRIGHT, (Born 1872.)
Ann WRIGHT, (Date of birth & death unknown)
Palmater John WRIGHT, (3/10/1873–15/5/1939).

They migrated with their first three children to Port Adelaide on board the ship ‘Scottish Lassie’ on 2/1/1878. They had thirteen children; ten being born after arrival in Australia.

His son Palmater John WRIGHT was my grandfather. Born in Mary Street, West Cowes, Isle of Wight, on 3//10/1873 and died in Adelaide on 15/5/1939. He migrated to Australia with his parents at the age of five years, on board a ship called the ‘Scottish Lassie’ and disembarked at Port Adelaide on 2/1/1878. When he grew up, he became a Fitter & Turner by trade.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you not got a copy of their marriage certficate? Are you sure they were married on IOW or at Elham, Kent?
How sure are you of what you have so far?
There is a family tree on Ancestry for a William Henry Wright born 1831 in London, died 1891 in Adelaide, who married Sarah Friend born 1846 in Elham, Kent died 1932 in Adelaide. His parents were Stephen Wright and Margaret Turbit and William Henry had a brother called Parmeter born in 1834.

Thanks for your help.
I will try to dig out the documents from my brother. But I believe based on research I did today that they were actually married in Kent, not Isle of Wight. Sarah Friend seems to have come from Kent.

Family hand down stories say that William did not really die in Adelaide 1890-91, but went off to the British Army in india and was killed there. However from research I did today it seems he was back in Cowes by 1901 and appears on the census. It looks to me as if he really abandoned his wife and died later on the Isle of Wight. But I cant get anything on him after the 1901 census.

I cant seem to find the family tree on ancestry. Do you have a link?

Regards

Hi Gallopingjack, It must be something in the name WRIGHT, I am looking for a Francis Leonard Wright who had a child here in Melbourne,Australia 1890, named Stella Wright, Not married, no registration of birth. Similar story.."he was sent back to England via the Boer War, where he died"!! Another member is helping me out and looking at war recotds, but it is a familar, interesting story. Regards
Hi my ggreat grandfather is Palmater Wright. My great grandfather is his son Albert. I was just wondering who else you might be related to. Because as far as I know none of Palmaters other children had any children of their own. I know he married again but am unsure if they had any children. If there is anything I can help you with please let me know. Thanks very much
