Why were the small Fiats called Cinquecento and Seicento, which translate as 500 and 600, when they had 900 or 1100 cc engines ?

It's a throwback to models which used those numbers from the 1930s onwards.

Thanks Kempie - I'm old enough to remember seeing a Fiat 500 in the late 1930's - that really dates me !
