Mcafee was preinstalled on new computers I bought this year, but didn't like it mainly because I have been used to another program. In the end I uninstalled it and it turns out it was causing some problems with some programs.

I installed the one I knew and trusted - AVG, who do a very good free version.
Well, it's hardly just any old company that's taken over McAfee. Just the worlds largest chipmaker, Intel.

I don't see why the takeover would be any reason to stop using the product.
The company who supplied my PC swear by AVG - they put the free version on all their builds.

I have used it for the last fifteen years, only had one major crash - but that was a faulty software install and I surf a lot.
AVG 2011 is great and I can give 2 recent examples why. This application recently stopped my sister in laws laptop from being infected by a virus on her usb stick (picked up from college pc). The college has been informed.

I heard from a mate that his pc received a virus from a hacked website.

AVG stopped both in their tracks and was removed ok. Performed "deep" full computer scan afterwards as a precaution.
Can I instal AVG if McAfee is already installed?
TIA

Yes, though that will do little other than slow your machine down. Download AVG free, uninstall McAfee, install AVG and do a complete scan.
Thanks, Mark.

Also, don't forget to run MalwareBytes once a week or so, or whenever you think your machine might have picked up something dodgy:

McAfee is now owned by Intel and will be installed on their chips a a later stage .The company is still working as normal as a subsidiary and should honour your subscription no need to worry you are ok .
