I'm at the city hospital in birmingham and stood outside, admittedly in the sunshine, there are people in pyjamas, pushing drip trolleys, smoking.

I don't get it - if you're ill enough for a drip trolley, you really shouldn't be smoking should you? Or is there a point missed somewhere?

There is a curious thing about smoking;
If you have a full packet of cigarettes you may well only smoke 4 in a day. If you have only 4 cigarettes in your packet, you'll go through them within an hour of getting up....

The more you fret about *not* smoking.......the greater it plays on your mind, and the greater the urge to smoke.

I visited my brother in hospital when he had cancer and there were patients outside, attached to their chemo drips, having a fag.
I gave up smoking while in hospital but fully understand that if you are addicted it is an all consuming need. The trouble with smoking is that all the bad things happen to someoneelse and we all know people who "never smoked in their life but still died of cancer" Pity the people still smoking, they are more likely than you to suffer in the long run.
I was in hospital recently for just over a week, outside the main entrance were loads of signs re no smoking anywhere within the grounds. A few yards away, and inside the grounds, was a shed for the smokers to shelter in. You work it out.
If patients are going to smoke - and they are - then it makes sense if they all smoke in one place, so it can be kept tidy.

The signs are to prevent the casual smoker from having a fag walking about and leaving dog ends.
My sister-in-law smoked until the day she died (of cancer of course). And a friend also smoked and said he had enjoyed every one of them. He also died of cancer. There is no way either one of them would stop although it was basically the cigarettes that had killed them prematurely.
