The GP got back to me and assured me that the advice had changed. Apparently if someone has been stable on methotrexate for some time (which my elderly relative has been) then the current advice is to test at three monthly intervals rather than monthly.

thanks for update ladyalex I have been on methotrexate for 6 years now so must ask my GP if I can go 3 monthly had no problems so far.
