i had many trips to the dentist late last year and had what i thought the final treatment in january a tooth removed. but now i'm getting toothache again in another tooth that was filled during my treatments. hot or cold food/drinks set it off . so i brought some "instant relief" sensitive toothpaste as well as cleaning my teeth with it i put it directly on the tooth thats hurting and rub it in but it hurts like hell while doing this until it takes affects . is there anything else i can use. i take iburofen when the pain gets bad . i'm hoping it's just a sensitive tooth as it was xrayed before it was filled late last year. i know i should go back to the dentist but i'm terrified of dentists i had to take diazapan to have this last lot of treatment.

sounds like the filling is too deep and its touching the nerve - no other option that to go back and get it sorted i'm afraid. I had one like that and it was a nightmare when travelling by plane. I think the pressure didn't help.

it was a deep filling but i've had no trouble from it until a couple of weeks ago. a leaflet i got about this toothpaste says to rub it onto the tooth for about a minute. i can't take asprin but holding warm brandy or whisky in my mouth helps .

thanks i will do. i'm missing my hot coffee's lol.
you may have developed an abcess under the tooth, you need to go back to the dentist.
Have you got any clove oil, net? Rubbing that on the tooth will give some temporary relief.
I know it's not what you want to hear but you do need to go back to the dentist.I'm afaaid it sounds like the filling has not had enough lining put in it before the amalgam was put in,or there is the possibility that there was a bit of decay on the root that was not picked up on the x-ray.
All these other treatments may give you temporary relief, but as I was a dental nurse in a past life I have seen a few teeth like this.
Your dentist,if any good, will be understanding about how nervous you are, tell him/her.If you are not happy with their response get another dentist! Its up to you who treats you.
All the best

yes got some clove oil going to try it the pain killers have worn off . might be up all night with this darn tooth will be ringing the dentist on monday just tell him to pull it out .
Buy a tube of Orajel Dental Gel, and put a dab on the tooth with a cotton bud, and your pain WILL go.
There's always a chance of infection creeping in to the root no matter how good or careful the dentist is. In fact, it can even happen in the absence of any treatment. You really do need to get back to the dentist and get it sorted, even though you'd rather not. Meantime, keep taking the painkillers and, if you don't have to drive or whatever, and if you're OK with it, take a shot of whisky or brandy to help you sleep. I find baby teething gel helps too.

Like you, I thought I'd done with mine just before Xmas, but have had to go back to the dentist again recently because of one huge abcess for which I'm still taking antibiotics. Sadly, it happens.
