Struggling to find the above on 1861 census. He was married by then (married Elizabeth Puddicombe in 1852) and was living in Crediton, Devon in 1851 & 1871 (both times with Elizabeth, on the former they were "living in sin"!!!! and on the latter his M-i-L, Fanny Puddicombe is present .... can anyone find him in 1871? Surname derived over the years on another line to ELSDON, but thought I had tried all combinations/possibilities ............ HELP!!

And also - ar there any children? These may be on the 1861, but married in 1852 and next sighting is 1871 with no kids ... could they have been born and gone by then??
find Fanny Puddicombe on the 1861, she's easy to find, then in the image box at the top change the number 4 to 15 and they are at the bottom of the page I think, with their children on the next page, John is a cordwainer (leather worker shoe maker)
They live in Park Street, children are:
Fanny 17
Frank 15
Frederick 12
Harry 8
ralph 6
George 2
Diana 11 months

Does that sound like them?
There is a servant Ann Bolt aged 27
also in the same ED there are several other Elston families, i found them by scrolling through the ed one folio at a time.
actually on the same page as the above children, there is a second John Elston and wife elizabeth, he is also a corwainer but they don't have any children. That John is 35 and elizabeth 32.
I have Elston(e)s in my tree, from just over the border in Somerset...........however, for some reason, as yet unknown, they became Hoopers.........

Jackthehat - would be really fascnating if they were connected ...... drop me an email at [email protected] if you would like to access my tree to check ......

Dotty - thank you .... can't get into ancestry at the moment, but will look later .... are you saying John and Elizabeth had no children?
Sorry this is the printer version of the 1861 transcription, the other John with all the children is married to a Charlotte actually not Elizabeth.
