I read plenty of books and usually buy second hand, can anyone tell me why often in second hand books a corner of one of the first couple of pages has been cut off?

Probably been remaindered by the publisher so the cut (sometimes a nick, sometimes a marker line across the page edges) prevents the book being sold at cover price.
Or maybe because a price was written there and the new seller doesn't want to confuse you.
