Why exactly are we fighting in this war?

Is it because Britain have been threatened, or simply because our Prime Minister feels like he wants to get involved with it all?

Are we protecting the Libyan people or have we been threatened by Gadaffi. I'm confused!

If it's because we are protecting the Libyans, i think it's shocking. As much as it's a sad state of affairs that these people are suffering, surely our soldiers are suffering too by risking their life in a fight that wasn't supposed to be ours?

Am i totally wrong, as i know nothing about this, and this is why i'm asking?

it's all scary, so i'd like to know. <3

1) It is not a war as such, the UN agreed a no fly zone and that is what is happening.

2) Yes, it is intended to protect the Lybians. When some nut slaughters people the internation community has a duty to protect them. Which is what is happening.

3) There are no soldiers. This is not a ground offensive, at least not yet. Teh likelyhood of a plane being shot down is possible but small.

4) It is not just Britian, many nations are taking part.

I know that more nations than Britain are involved, I was just wondering about Britain as this is where me and my family are.

Thanks for the answer.
Its very simple, Libya has oil, USA likes oil and likes occupying and controlling where ever there is oil. USA wanted UNO to say "yes go ahead" and so UNO gave a go ahead as they know that if USA want a go ahead then they have to give it or else USA will go ahead anyway (remember Iraq?) Now where USA attacks or plans to attack, they always need more people with them so they could call it "world community" and then they say "you are either with us or against us", so not much choice there either. So we might as well join in. And in the end we may get a share out of the bounty.

So its that simple.
It's simple.......Gadaffi and Blair were seen hugging each other. David Cameron and Obama hate Blair so are now going to bomb the crap out of Libya. Oh, and Libya has oil.
Imagine being in the Armed Forces £bns being spent on advanced weaponry and technology and it is sitting in the cupboard unused. It may be taken out and used in some field on Salisbury Plain but never tried out on the real thing.

Along comes a despot like Gaddafi and it gives the government a feeble excuse to use this technology to the full not only trying it out in combat but as a sales arena where we can unload some of the stuff to countries like Saudi Arabia, India, Pakistan and the like.

If succesfull the PM comes out smelling like roses although he has only depeated a third world tyrant and can pronouce he has saved the world. When he retires he can travel the world giving lectures as now he has achieved global status.
can someone explain to me why it's "about oil"? Surely the oil is there regardless, the west need oil, we don't give a thrupney who we buy it from so how is oil relevant?
After the fall of Saddam Iraq signed 50 year contracts with American oil companies. Libyans can't eat their oil. They have to sell it somewhere. The west probably thinks better they sell it to us than to the Chinese.
I heard the Libya oil minister saying existing oil contracts will be maintained. I think the main worry will be the number of British companies including BP who are heavily investing in Libya.
Can you imagine them ever be allowed back in especially if Gaddafi clings on?
I may have missed it but I have not seen the PM address the British people on TV, over this.

Neither has there been a press conference, when smarter people than us could ask the leading questions, so that the British public can be given the chance of hearing some answers.
