Three hours without internet connection. Tried following on-line instructions. Zilch.(Had difficulty trying to understand them). Eventually gave in and phoned number suggested. Some more difficulty with understanding accent of nice Indian lady. Eventually succeeded with the help of a drawing pin. Why do these people assume that you have a sharp instrument next to your home hub? Have now sellotaped one there.

Daisy you are not supposed to go near anything sharp!!!!
Maybe I need a drawing pin too. What on earth did you do with it ?
well daisy its nice to know that in this age of internet technology that your problems have been solved by a drawing pin and some cellotape..

Sorry Alex, I was very careful, did a full risk assessment and only slightly scratched myself. Blood is such a pretty shade.

Ladyalex, stuck it in the reset to defaults hole in the hub. Yeah, right, have no idea why it worked either! But it did.
Thanks for the tip. I'll make a note of it.

Be careful......you never know what might crawl out of the hub...
Er, excuse me for being thick (or, more accurately, even thicker than I usually am), but how do you 'follow on-line instructions' without an internet connection?

Hub in spare room. Will keep the door strictly closed. Only move the laptop in there when it gets warm enough to do without the heating. What would you suggest, fly spray or mustard gas? Just in case.
I wondered that too, Chris.

I have a poky metal sticky thing on my keyring which is used for resetting stuff like that (and locking petrol pumps on when I'm filling up)

Sorry, Chuck. I find your post hard to follow. You really must learn that most of us around here aren't familiar with the complex language of high technology, that IT experts like you take for granted. I refer, of course, to "a poky metal sticky thing" ;-)

Absolutely no idea. Tried starting up as usual. Got instruction wireless now connected, excellent, followed by announcement not connected.
To check your (approximate) connection speed, Daisy, go here and click on 'Begin test: Recommended Server':

(My own connection is currently showing downloads at 5.66Mbps)
