Well the most recent 'local' communication method has een Bluetooth .. which is good for small devices in proximity, bit not particularly secure though. Bluetooth is set to be upgraded further.
It's possible to set up a wireless network in a car .. but impossible at present to guarantee an internet connection permanently. This can be done with mobile type connections. Local wireless hot spots are not good enough .. nor enough of them .. and many are secured networks.

No probs!
Here in the U.S. (and, I suspect the U.K.) depending on your cellular phone service plan and supplier, you can subscribe to Mobil Services. Mine runs about $10.00 (US) per month and cost me about $50 to get set up. It's simple really... you are supplied with a cable that connects your digital cell phone to your laptop. Then it's just a matter of your cell phone being able to reach a cell tower used by your cell phone provider. I use Verizon and live in the western U.S. with some still remote places but have had good luck with the devices. There are some caveats (isn't there always) that apply to the equipment and charges, but it's quite convenient...
